Calvin Ross Carl | Artist and Creative Lead at Sincerely Truman

Calvin paints pictures physically and figuratively. His work as a creative lead at the heartfelt agency Sincerely Truman helps clients tell honest, compelling stories. His work as a visual artist paints slightly gloppy, slightly cynical pieces of mind.

Your manifesto / rules to live by / motto:

Most things are boring most of the time.

How would you describe your work if you left out all the boring parts?

In a nutshell, I apply systems or structures to images and words. I know that sounds generic. However, by night I am an artist where my work focuses on aesthetics taken from mundane aspects of life and applying grids and systems to them in an attempt to find beauty, meaning and comfort in the mundane. By day my specialty is in user experience design where I attempt to apply design systems to the way people behave, whether it’s online or IRL.

2. Pen, pencil, or stylus?

Dixon Ticonderoga Pencils until the day I die. Preferably in black, not the standard yellow.

3. Be honest: how often do you clean your desk?

I tend to be fairly rigorous and structured in all things in life, except when it comes to keeping my workspaces clean. In my two years at Sincerely Truman, I have removed papers from my desk maybe two or three times. I have definitely never wiped it down clean.

BLOCKITECTURE SERIES 1: BRUTALISM

Hard to get much blockier than Brutalist architecture, but the hard thinkers of Areaware were up to the challenge. Sculpture meets cityscape meets haptic fun in this set of nesting hand-painted blocks. Designer James Paulius’ intent was to create a timeless toy that challenges the user’s creativity and understanding of physical laws, and we think he did swell. These were even awarded first place in the RIT Metaproject 03 design competition! A great addition to creative workspaces or the toy bin of your favorite future architect. Ingeniusly shaped, supermodular and much easier to tidy away than its concrete forebears.
